06 Dec Serve People Like Jesus Did
Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Philippians 2: 4-8
This is a great Christmas verse when you realize that what Paul was describing in Jesus emptying himself of his divinity (yet retaining His divinity), was God coming to earth to become a man in order to show us the way. Paul challenges the Philippians to look out for the interests of others instead of being self-centered. He uses the unselfishness of Jesus to illustrate what that looks like.
There’s the call here to humble ourselves as servants in order to put Jesus and others first in our lives. There is even the call to identify with becoming obedient to death as we die to self and self-centeredness. It was Jesus who said, ‘if any one would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.’
To the degree that you die to self and live for Jesus and others, it will be to that degree that resurrection life and fruitfulness will flow out of your life. To the degree that you humble yourself as a servant and put others before yourself, it will be to that degree that true greatness and lasting eternal influence will happen in your life.
I am inspired to humble myself as a servant and serve the people in my life. That starts first with loving my wife and being sensitive to her needs. I find a joy in pleasing her and knowing that God is pleased when I honor her in all the things I do for her.
Putting the interests of others before my own involves looking for ways to serve the people God brings into my life. I am challenged by this verse to step up my commitment to humble myself and be a servant just like Jesus.
Father God, I come to you today and ask that You would help me to serve in the ways you want me to serve. I choose to humble myself before You and follow You fully. Lord Jesus, thank you for showing the way by dying on the cross. I pray that my life would be an example of one who lays down his life for others and the cause of Christ. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and anoint me to walk in your presence and live for You wholeheartedly. Help me to be a blessing to the people in my life as I serve faithfully and live out the cross of Jesus Christ.
