20 Sep Baptism of Power and Fire Brings Fruitfulness
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Luke 3: 15-17
John the Baptist was privileged to be the prophet who would prepare the way for the coming of the Lord Jesus. Jesus is the one who would come and baptize people with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus empowers us to live for Him and to be a strong witness for Him.
But there is also this refining Fire that John refers to. John warned of a coming judgment by comparing those who refuse to live for God to the useless chaff, the outer husk of the grain. Those who would turn to God and are filled with God’s Spirit are people who allow the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn away the impurities and useless pursuits that so easily dominate people’s lives. There is the promise of fruitfulness for those who will live for God and allow Him to refine them for lasting productive service for His Kingdom.
I realize from these words how important it is to have this daily time in His Word and to ask Jesus to fill me with His Holy Spirit for each day. As I am filled with God’s Spirit, He is faithful to refine me, to guide me and to help me to be effective and fruitful for Him. I can’t make fruit happen, but as I stay in step with His Spirit, and obey Him, there is the promise of great fruitfulness.
I want so much to help others come to Jesus and allow God to so transform their lives that they become incredible gifts that God can use to bring many to the Lord. I would do well to recognize the refining work of His fire in my life that helps me to see what God is seeing and to step away from anything that would distract me from fulfilling His purposes for my life.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for caring for me so completely. I receive your love and your help today. Come Lord Jesus and fill me with your Holy Spirit in a fresh and new way. I humble myself before You and admit my need for You every day of my life. I welcome your presence in my life. Help me to bless others and to inspire many to live for You in this place of lasting and substantial fruitfulness.
