28 Jun There’s a Reward for Those Who Live for God
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Paul speaks these words at the end of his life and is explaining to Timothy his desire to honor the Lord to the end. Paul is stating that there’s a spiritual battle that he has fought in his own life and on behalf of many others through his preaching, pastoring and prayers. He finished the race by serving God wholeheartedly to the end. He kept the faith and was faithful to what he understood God was calling him to do.
We can only speculate about what this crown of righteousness means in heaven. But we do know that there is a great reward for those who have followed the Lord and kept the faith in finishing the race. There are assignments God has given to every one of us, and to the degree that we long for His appearing and understand that there will be a day of accounting, it will be to that degree that we will take seriously the call to fight the good fight of growing spiritually and living for eternity instead of this world.
With Paul, I want to be able to say, I have fought the fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. That means for me today to be diligent in the study and preparation of sermons and teachings for the church I pastor. It means to fully embrace the responsibility of spiritual warfare in prayer and fight on behalf of lost and struggling souls for their salvation and spiritual progress through intercessory prayer.
It means that I need to keep the faith and inspire others to stay true to the faith through discipleship and leadership development. It means to be a godly example to my wife and children. It means to pastor God’s people to the best of my ability.
Lord Jesus, I set my heart to fight the good fight of faith through spiritual warfare, spiritual growth, and pastoring your people. Help me to be fervent in prayer, faithful to hear your voice and obey, and careful to love your people with care and compassion. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I may discern how You want me to fulfill your will in my life this day. I want to be able to say with confidence at the end of my life that I have fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.
