True Rest is Found in Coming to Jesus

True Rest is Found in Coming to Jesus

Scripture —

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11: 28-30

The Prince of Peace is also the Author and Giver of true rest. Jesus offers to all of us today this place of rest if we’ll come to Him. He calls us to take his yoke on us. This means that when we come to Jesus, He shows us how to live life with His strength and grace. His way of leading us in incredibly efficient and just right for each of our own unique assignments.  This place of rest involves stepping into His grace which empowers us to do what He has originally called us to do.

It’s when we step outside that grace and try to do things that He’s not called us to do that we get weary. Weariness happens when we carry our own burdens and take on concerns, worries and time consuming pursuits that wear us out instead of renewing us. Here is the way the Message Bible states it: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

I happily embrace the call to come to Jesus today. He is the One who speaks to my heart and reassures me of His grace and His great plans for me. I know that His thoughts toward me are thoughts of peace and great expectations for the future.

As I come to Jesus and follow Him closely, there is the promise of rest that I can enter into. Rest comes even in the midst of busy days and full lives. This kind of rest comes from being with Jesus and knowing that He’s with me through each day to give me wisdom and strength to embrace the assignments and valuable people that He wants me to serve.

Lord Jesus, I come to You this day and choose to find rest for my soul in your presence. Thank You for your reassuring presence that goes with me today and that reminds me that You will be faithful to guide me and fill me with your strength and your Spirit. Come fill me with your Spirit and help me to live for You effectively today and every day.
