17 May Called to be Generous with a Heart of Integrity
“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.”
1 Chronicles 29: 14-17
King David is thanking the Lord for His grace upon his life that has empowered him to be generous and to lead a people who were generous.
I am struck by King David’s words here that acknowledges that God is pleased with integrity as He tests the people’s hearts and finds hearts that are generous. God still tests our hearts today — every day — to see if we will be generous with the resources He has entrusted us with. Everything that we have has come from God — this is what David acknowledges and it is wise for us to recognize that God is our source and has richly provided for us. This should inspire us to be generous at all times, to provide for the work of the Lord, and to look for ways to help and give to the poor.
As a pastor I deal often with people who have hard hearts. As we humble ourselves before God and acknowledge that He is our source for everything we have, it should humble us and evoke in us a grateful heart.
From a grateful heart that moves with integrity, we find that we can live with open hands, rather than clinched fists. As we surrender each day to our Lord, He enlarges our hearts to be generous to people who are in need and He helps us to trust in Him for all things. Are there tests that you are going through right now that God is using to refine integrity and purity of heart in you?
Father God, I set my heart to hear your voice this day. Help me to soften my heart before You and closely follow You in all things. Come Lord Jesus and help me to do your will today. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me to see all that you are calling me to do today. Help me to be generous at all times with my time, with my heart and with the resources you have entrusted to my care.
