Remember the True Source of Your Blessings

Remember the True Source of Your Blessings

Scripture —

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.

24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. Deuteronomy 14: 22-29

Moses is recounting to the people how God provided for them in the wilderness and made sure they would make it. Several chapters earlier in Deuteronomy Moses speaks to the tendency of the human heart that thinks that we can be self sufficient when he says: You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

It so easy for many people today to forget what the Lord has done for them. There are many who don’t even acknowledge His presence and provision. But truly, everything we have has come from Him. He is the one who has given us the ability to be fruitful and successful.

One of the ways that my wife and I acknowledge the Lord’s provision in our lives is to give back to Him a portion of how he has blessed us. The Scriptures are clear in teaching about the “Tithe,” (Ten per cent of our income). Over the years we have learned that God is so faithful to take care of our needs when we put Him first by giving consistently of our tithe and offerings to the Lord.

This discipline of giving to the Lord acts in so many ways to bring order to our finances. It releases us from the grips of greed and selfishness and it has a built in effect of helping us to be frugal, careful and intentional about our finances. There is a greater order and discipline to our spending because of this gift of Tithing. It truly is a gift to give, because we know that we are investing in eternity and the lives of people that God is saving. It is truly a gift because this helps us to keep our finances in a healthy place of order and right priorities.

Thank You Lord for your provision in all things. I set my heart to give to You today, not just financially, but with my whole heart in time, energy and focus. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me to be a blessing to the people I come in contact with today. Help me to be generous and to teach others to trust in You with their finances and in every area of their lives.
