01 Feb Develop Patience and Be Rewarded
When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” Exodus 32: 1-4
The Children of Israel became impatient because they thought their leader, Moses, was taking too long on the mountaintop with God. In their impatience, they asked Aaron to make an idol so that they would have something else to trust in.
We’re not that different today. Though we probably wouldn’t make a golden calf like Aaron did, there are many of us who end up leaving God and going our own way when we get impatient and think that God has forgotten us or is taking too long to come through for us. On that day of rebellion for the Children of Israel, over 3000 of them died because of their impatience and disobedience. Present day idolatry happens when we get tired of waiting for God and attempt to take matters into our own hands. There are many in our country today who have forsaken God because they perceive that God has not been just or fair because of life circumstances. Rather than becoming impatient, we need to surrender to the process of refinement that God is doing in us and embrace His plan and direction for our lives.
This story of a rebellious and impatient people inspires me to trust God in all things and allow His work of patience and character to be accomplished in my life. We all get impatient at times, but it is so important for us to take time to seek God in prayer, wait on Him in stillness and quietness, and allow Him to speak to us words of direction and perspective.
I set my heart to seek Him this day, for when I put Him first in my life and trust in His direction, I know that He will be faithful to accomplish His purposes in my life. I don’t want to make the mistake of ignoring God and going off to do my own thing and allow other things in this life to become meaningless idols. The pursuit of His Kingdom and fulfilling His purposes in my life is the thing that will count for eternity. I don’t want to miss it by being distracted by trivial and meaningless pursuits in this life.
Lord help me to be patient with the process of refinement that You’re doing in my life. I set my heart to seek You this day and trust in your loving guidance. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me to hear your guiding voice today in all things. Help me to lead your people the way that we should go in following You and honoring You with our lives. Deliver this country from meaningless idolatry. I pray for your people this day that they would rise up and be a powerful example of your grace and love to a generation of people who need to know You.
