08 Mar Pass the Test of Adversity
Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers. Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. Deuteronomy 8: 1-2
Moses was reminding the people about how God had tested them to see what was in their hearts. There are times in life when God will allow us to go through desert and wilderness times; difficult times to refine us and to test us to see if we are truly committed to His will.
Much of life is a test that if we can pass, then the Lord can bring further blessing to our lives. He wants to bless his people, but what is most important is that we are so fully devoted to the Lord Jesus so that when He does bless us, we remain in that place of dependence on Him. The important call here is to carefully follow the instruction of the Lord for our lives.
I know that God has taken me through some challenging times to test me and to see what was in my heart. I have had to go through a number of desert times in order for God to shape me and refine me in order to be the pastor and leader He wants me to be.
Those times aren’t always easy, but I’ve discovered that I can save myself a lot of heartache and time if I’ll be careful to obey Him each day. Obedience involves an hourly surrender of my will to His will and choosing to respond to His Presence in my life in a moment by moment way. Obedience will involve honoring my wife and being sensitive to her needs, and to treat her as a precious gift that God has entrusted to me. I obey the Lord by praying for my children and praying for the people God has entrusted to my care. Obedience involves speaking up about Jesus to friends who still need to come to Him for salvation.
Surrendering to His will is at times difficult, but it is a daily challenge for all of us. I am learning that stepping up to the challenge and going God’s way will be well worth it over the long haul.
Thank You, Father God for loving me so much to allow me to be tested. I know that You are refining me and shaping me into the likeness of Jesus. Lord Jesus, come fill me with your Spirit so that I will have the power to obey You in all things. Show me what I need to learn through the tests and help me to cooperate with the larger work of character that You’re working in my life.
