23 Feb Make the Most of Your Time Here
The length of our days is seventy years—
or eighty, if we have the strength;
yet their span is but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90: 10, 12
Life is shorter than we realize. Time goes so quickly and for many they spend most of their lives reaching and pining for those things that never satisfy. We need to understand that God created us to have relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. The secret to contentment and fulfillment is found in relationship with Jesus. He is the Creator who created pleasure, the need for us to work and accomplish something, and the sense of eternal purpose that He deposited in the heart of every man, woman and child.
When we embrace a life of serving God and people, that is when we truly find life. There’s a mission for every believer in Christ to make the most of every opportunity to serve God, love people and bring many into relationship with Jesus. That’s why the Psalmist says: “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
The New Living Translation puts it this way:
10 Seventy years are given to us!
Some even live to eighty.
But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble;
soon they disappear, and we fly away.
12 Teach us to realize the brevity of life,
so that we may grow in wisdom.
I know there have been times in my life when I didn’t use my time wisely. I am reminded by this scripture that this life and the time I have been given on this earth is a gift that I need to steward and use wisely.
There are temptations and timewasters every day that I need to say no to. As I keep my eyes on an eternal perspective, that helps me to live life so that I have no regrets. I want to stand before my Lord on that Day with a confidence and a peace that knows that I gave my best for Him. Even when I make mistakes and fall short of His plans, I must remember that He is a God of grace and second and third chances who is always there to give me a new start. That’s true for all of us.
Thank You Heavenly Father for your great grace and mercy. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for my sin and redeem me to a life of meaning and purpose. Come Lord Jesus and fill me with your love. Forgive me for the times that I have frittered away valuable time. Help me to number my days so that I may live life carefully and wisely. Fill me with your Spirit and help me to live for You and for your people. Give me a heart of wisdom and vision so that I see what You are seeing and empower me to make my life count for eternity and your grand purposes.
